It is the world's first industrial facility that is supposed to produce climate-friendly cement – or at least significantly more climate-friendly than had long been possible. The production at the gray plant is meant to become greener.

A new, specialized tower, known as an "absorber unit,” captures a portion of the carbon dioxide (CO2) from cement production before the greenhouse gas can escape into the air and contribute to the warming of the atmosphere. At its commissioning in June 2025, Heidelberg Materials spoke of a "historic milestone" and the beginning of a "new era of sustainable construction." It was a pledge to climate protection from a major player in an industry with extremely high greenhouse gas emissions.

One year later, it has become clear that the cement company has so far not been able to keep that promise. DER SPIEGEL, together with four international media partners coordinated by the network European Investigative Collaborations (EIC), has analyzed the plant’s CO2 emissions.
